This Forum invited men and their supporters to participate in the discussion in how to improve men's prostate health but advocate for it as well.  The program featured various speakers, along with Dr. Vipul Patel, NBA All-Star and IPCF Chairman Oscar Robertson and other respected faculty professionals.

The event, in partnership with AdventHealth Global Robotics Institute, was held with efforts to promote research, educate men and encourage prostate cancer screening.  A breakfast was served while patients, doctors and speakers gathered to form community. Topics covered were men’s prostate healthcare anatomy, understanding pathology, basic screening practices, prostate cancer genetics and recurrence, and advanced exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, and lifestyle practices while living with prostate cancer. In addition, participants interacted with various experts and panelists in a question-and-answer session. Attendees were also informed about all the free resources available at the International Prostate Cancer Foundation website, including 3 new volumes of Prostate Cancer Guides; these are comprehensive books on prostate cancer at any stage and caregiving for a prostate cancer diagnosis. A recognition presentation was held to acknowledge and honor those who have gone above and beyond to advocate for prostate cancer. (Pictured above) This year, an advocacy panel was added as well to share all the exciting things the Global Robotics Institute and International Prostate Cancer teams are doing to help propel the prostate cancer agenda forward. Including a trip to Washington D.C. to lobby the United States Congress on various prostate cancer awareness, research, and financial initiatives, such as: Support Prostate Cancer Research at the Department of Defense and the PC-CARE Act. For more information on this visit to Congress click here.

NBA All-Star Legend, IPCF Chairman and Prostate Cancer Survivor Oscar Robertson was in attendance and was kind enough to take the stage as a panelist as well as lend his voice to advocacy and education by doing press interviews on why PSA screening is so important for all men, but especially African American men who are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer. The day was a great success! Participants walked away not only with new information but with a bag of goodies to continue to spread awareness and start the conversation around DRE and PSA screening!

IPCF FUNDS STUDY: INTEGRATED RNA AND METABOLITE PROFILING OF URINE LIQUID BIOPSIES FOR PROSTATE CANCER BIOMARKER DISCOVERY
Sensitive and specific diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for prostate cancer (PCa) are urgently needed. Urine samples are a non-invasive means to obtain abundant and readily accessible “liquid biopsies”. Herein we used urine liquid biopsies to identify and characterize a novel group of urine-enriched RNAs and metabolites in PCa patients and normal individuals with or without benign prostatic disease.

➤ A Celebration of Collaboration

On May 10, 2013 the International Prostate Cancer Foundation awarded Ranjan Perera, Ph.D., scientific director of analytical genomics and bioinformatics at the Sanford-Burnham Lake Nona campus, $60,000 to fund a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Perera’s lab.

Sanford-Burnham can really make an impact in the field,” said our founder Dr. Vipul Patel,as he acknowledged Dr. Perera’s work to identify molecular markers for prostate cancer. With a shared goal to develop better diagnoses and treatments, this post-doctorate grant is only the first step in a long and mutually beneficial partnership between us here at the International Prostate Cancer Foundation and the great minds at Sanford-Burnham.

In Sanford-Burnham Lake Nona labs, Dr. Perera and his team were working on early prognostic markers for prostate cancer. The goal was to be able to diagnose prostate cancer earlier, through a simple blood test instead of an invasive biopsy. “This research is urgently needed as professionals from all aspects of the field have been calling for these molecular markers. Not just for prostate cancer, but other malignant tumors as well,” explained Perera.

We encourage you to read more about Dr. Perera’s research here.

➤ Blueprint for Men's Health

Partnering with the Florida Hospital Foundation, the International Prostate Cancer Foundation is proud to lend sponsorship to an Educational Program — Blueprint for Men’s Health: A Global Robotics Institute Survivorship Program. Recognizing the importance of ongoing follow-up patient care, Dr. Vipul Patel and team have worked to develop this pilot program to serve as a resource for patients.

Blueprint for Men’s Health: GRI Survivorship Program is the first of its kind. It provides a tailored assessment of an individual’s health care needs as well as vital information, assisting patients with various challenges that must be met following prostate cancer surgery. Focused on addressing post-cancer concerns such as nutrition, relationships, exercise, genetics and planning for a life after cancer. The organization hopes to build support and foster a community for those fighting prostate cancer.
